This strain of asparagus originates from Harmony Homestead in
Pennsylvania, likely from Mary Washington
or a contemporary century old variety. Vigorous, hardy, and productive, no homestead garden is complete without
an asparagus patch. Although easy to
start from seed, growers must be patient- wait at least 3 years to begin
harvesting spears. Sow seeds in flats in
the spring, waiting until the first needle thin spears transform into little
ferns before carefully transplanting each small plant into its permanent home
(spaced 2 feet apart for best long term production). Asparagus performs best in rich soil and with
yearly applications of mulch to control weeds. Asparagus grown from seed will result in both male and female plants. 20-25 seeds
