All types of squash and pumpkins are close cousins botanically. The four species usually grown in Canada are Cucurbita pepo (delicata, acorn, zucchini, most pumpkins), Cucurbita moschata (butternut), Cucurbita maxima (hubbard, buttercup, kuri) and Cucurbita mixta (cushaw squash).
All four species have basically the same growing requirements, although pepos tend to be a little earlier to mature (good for short season areas).
