Lagenaria siceraria - aka: Serpente di Sicilia, Cucuzza Squash. Probably the coolest new plant we grew on the farm last year. Picked young they're like the most delectable of zucchini; we feasted on them all through August. Their huge vines sprawled in every direction, and carried on through the drought and cucumber beetles. The bugs weren't even interested. They seem much hardier than the classic squash species.

When they reach full woody maturity they can be made into fall decorations, stylish accessories or didgeridoos (yes, I’ve tried it!). Their large white flowers open in the evening, and in warmer climates are pollinated by moths. I like to pick male flowers and hand pollinate the females as part of my evening rounds in the garden. Limited supply - 10 seeds
